The MBES Bathymetry Practical Exam is SPH Engineering's certification for drone survey teams, testing hands-on skill in gathering, processing and interpreting multibeam data with the EchoNIMBUS-MBES system. HobiTech coordinates enrolment in India.
How it works
- After successful payment, the exam is unlocked for your account in the Academy of SPH Engineering platform.
- Once enrolled, you can complete it at your own pace.
- After successfully passing, you receive a certificate from SPH Engineering that can be shared on LinkedIn.
What does the MBES Bathymetry exam certify?
SPH Engineering describes the exam as a certification of hands-on experience in 3 stages of a multibeam survey:
- Gathering MBES bathymetry data with the EchoNIMBUS-MBES sensor system
- Processing the recorded data
- Interpreting the results
SPH states that by the end of the certification process you are certified for operations using the EchoNIMBUS-MBES sensor and for data processing using the BeamworX suite. After passing, SPH Engineering issues a certificate that you can share on LinkedIn.
How do you prepare for the exam?
The exam matches SPH Engineering's 2-course multibeam training path:
- MBES-1 self-study: mission planning, execution and data verification with EchoNIMBUS-MBES
- MBES-2 trainer-led: processing multibeam data in BeamworX, from import and cleaning to calibration and deliverables
For MBES-1, SPH recommends basic drone piloting knowledge and familiarity with UgCS fundamentals, and says the course is not intended for complete beginners with no UAV experience. For MBES-2, SPH asks you to collect your own survey data before the session. If you need UgCS first, see our UgCS training page.
Check the exam requirements on the SPH Engineering Academy before you enrol; HobiTech can share the details when you request enrolment. If you work with a single-beam echo sounder instead, see the separate Bathymetry practical exam.
Which equipment and software does it cover?
The exam is built on SPH Engineering's multibeam drone system. From SPH's echo sounder technology page:
| Item | Details from SPH |
|---|---|
| Sensor | EchoNIMBUS-MBES multibeam echo sounder, 240 kHz, range 0.5 to 50 m |
| On-board computer | SkyHub, acting as datalogger and providing True Terrain Following for DJI drones |
| Flight planning | UgCS, for mission planning and flight control |
| Processing | BeamworX Suite |
| Compatible drones (examples) | DJI M400, M350 and M300; Inspired Flight IF1200A and IF800 |
Note that BeamworX NavAQ is not compatible with SPH Engineering's drone payloads. Related products in our store: SkyHub hardware, the SkyHub software package for echo sounder, and all sensors in our bathymetry collection.
What is multibeam drone bathymetry used for?
SPH Engineering names water depth mapping, dredging planning and monitoring, and tailings storage facility (TSF) monitoring as uses of its echo sounder system. SPH notes that a drone allows measurements in shallow, hazardous or inaccessible waters.
Why enrol through HobiTech?
HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru. The exam is delivered by SPH Engineering, and HobiTech coordinates enrolment for customers in India. Every order comes with a GST invoice. See our practical exam certification page, the bathymetry training page and the full training and certification page.
