Bathymetry Training & Certification
What will you learn in drone bathymetry training?
A drone-mounted echo sounder maps water depth in places that are hard to reach by boat (see SPH Engineering’s echo sounder page). HobiTech sells the systems in our bathymetry and bathymetry software collections. The courses cover two survey types:
- Single-beam echo sounder — BATHY-1 covers mounting the echo sounder on a drone, configuring survey parameters and planning bathymetry missions. BATHY-2 covers importing and cleaning survey data, generating bathymetric maps, and quality control and reporting.
- Multibeam echo sounder (MBES) — MBES-1 teaches you to run multibeam surveys independently. MBES-2 covers processing multibeam data in BeamworX: import, cleaning, calibration and deliverables.

Who runs the bathymetry training?
The courses and exams are delivered by SPH Engineering, the company behind UgCS and the Integrated Systems survey payloads. HobiTech coordinates enrolment for customers in India.
What is the difference between BATHY and MBES courses?
BATHY-1 and BATHY-2 cover surveys with a drone-mounted echo sounder, from data collection to processing. MBES-1 and MBES-2 cover multibeam echo sounder surveys, with processing in BeamworX software.
How do the self-study bathymetry courses work?
After payment, the course is unlocked for your account on the SPH Engineering Academy platform, and you can finish it at your own pace.
Do trainer-led bathymetry courses include practical work?
Yes. BATHY-1 includes a practical field exercise, and BATHY-2 and MBES-2 include a practical exercise. Remote support is offered as the alternative.
Which bathymetry certifications are available?
There are three practical exams: Bathymetry, MBES Bathymetry (using the EchoNIMBUS-MBES sensor system) and Data Collection, Processing & Interpretation. Each practical exam is unlocked on the SPH Engineering Academy platform after payment and can be completed at your own pace. After passing, you receive a certificate from SPH Engineering that can be shared on LinkedIn.
