Documentation & data sets
What is the MagDrone R1 used for?
The MagDrone R1 attaches to any drone with a payload of at least 1 kg. Its foldable arm lets the sensor fly with very low ground clearance, starting from a couple of dozen centimetres. SPH Engineering advises flying as low as possible, 1 m above the surface or lower for tasks such as UXO search, which needs a terrain-following system.
- Searching for UXO (unexploded ordnance)
- Locating buried metal pipes, shielded cables and power cables
- Archaeology
- Surveying for metal objects of a few hundred grams or heavier
Like every magnetometer, the R1 only sees ferrous material. SPH Engineering states that magnetometers cannot detect most types of modern landmines and should never be used to confirm that an area is clear.
What do you need to run the MagDrone R1?
The R1 has no internal data recorder. SPH Engineering states that it needs a SkyHub onboard computer with datalogging software. A typical system includes:
- Drone: DJI M400, DJI M350 RTK, DJI M300 RTK, Inspired Flight IF800, Inspired Flight IF1200A or similar. The R1 takes its power from the drone.
- Onboard computer: SkyHub, which logs the magnetometer data and runs terrain following with the SkyHub True Terrain Following package.
- Altimeter: a LightWare SF30/D laser altimeter or an Ainstein US-D1 radar altimeter.
- Flight planning: UgCS EXPERT.
- Processing: GeoHammer Pro for quick field processing, or Seequent Oasis montaj for large or complex projects. SENSYS also offers MAGNETO software.
For UXO and environmental work, SPH suggests 0.5–1 m line spacing, a drone height of about 1.5 m above ground and speeds up to 10 m/s. More detail is on SPH Engineering's magnetometer technology page.
How does the R1 compare with the R3 and R4?
| MagDrone R1 | MagDrone R3 | MagDrone R4 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fluxgate sensors | 1 | 2 | 5 |
| Design | Foldable arm | 1 m sensor bar | 2 m sensor bar |
| Weight (SPH listing) | 0.7 kg | 0.7 kg without battery | 1.4 kg |

Why buy the MagDrone R1 from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH's magnetometer training courses are also available through HobiTech.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sensor is in the MagDrone R1?
One SENSYS FGM3D/75 triaxial fluxgate sensor, with a dynamic range of ±75,000 nT and a sampling rate of 200–1,000 Hz as listed by SPH Engineering.
Does the MagDrone R1 record data itself?
No. It has no internal data recorder, so it needs a SkyHub onboard computer with datalogging software. It does send a live data stream to the ground station.
How low can the MagDrone R1 fly?
The folding arm allows sensor clearance from a couple of dozen centimetres. SPH recommends 1 m above the surface or lower for UXO search, using terrain following.
What is the size of the MagDrone R1?
818 × 185 × 80 mm folded and 1174 × 567 × 80 mm unfolded. It weighs 0.7 kg and is rated IP52.
Which software comes with the MagDrone R1?
The kit includes the MagDrone Data Tool software. For processing, SPH recommends GeoHammer Pro or Seequent Oasis montaj.
