Documentation & data sets
What is the MagArrow II used for?
The MagArrow II is the second generation of Geometrics' UAV magnetometer. It uses two laser-pumped cesium MFAM sensors, for redundancy and to avoid a dead zone. Typical uses:
- Environmental surveys for abandoned wells, pipes and storage tanks
- Geology: mapping variations in the magnetic field
- Archaeology: detecting weak anomalies from features and artefacts
- Searching for UXO (unexploded ordnance)
According to SPH Engineering, detection ranges from about 0.5 m for a hand grenade to several metres for larger UXO. Magnetometers cannot detect most modern landmines and must never be used to confirm that an area is clear.
What are the MagArrow II's key specifications?
Geometrics, the manufacturer, lists these figures:
- Sensitivity: 0.005 nT/√Hz rms typical
- Heading error: ±5 nT over full 360° equatorial and polar spins, typical
- Sampling: 1,000 Hz, synchronised to GPS 1PPS, 400 Hz bandwidth
- Survey speed: up to 10 m/s with 1 cm sample spacing
- GPS: 1.5 m 50% CEP, 1.0 m or better with SBAS
- Storage: 32 GB microSD card
- Download: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; about 1 minute to download 10 minutes of data
- Power: two XT60 connectors for 1800–2200 mAh, 3-cell, 11.1 V Li-Po batteries, hot-swappable, about 2 hours per charge
- Control: Android phone or tablet app, including Survey Manager
Batteries are not in the kit. Full details are in the Geometrics MagArrow II page.
How is the MagArrow mounted on a drone?
The MagArrow needs no data or power connection to the drone. To keep it away from motor and electronics noise, SPH Engineering recommends 3 m suspension ropes on larger drones such as the Inspired Flight IF1200A, or extension poles on smaller drones such as the DJI M350 RTK and M300 RTK. Mounting directly on the drone legs, with low-pass filtering in post-processing, works for UXO surveys but is less suited to weak or extended anomalies in archaeology and geology.
Supported drones include the DJI M400, M350 RTK, M300 RTK, Inspired Flight IF800 and IF1200A. Plan flights in UgCS EXPERT, and process data in GeoHammer Pro or Seequent Oasis montaj. See SPH Engineering's magnetometer technology page, or compare all drone magnetometers and magnetometer software.
Why buy the MagArrow II from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH's magnetometer training courses are also available through HobiTech.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the MagArrow II need a SkyHub or a data link to the drone?
No. It has its own GPS, data recorder, Wi-Fi and battery connection, so it needs no data or power connection to the drone.
How much does the MagArrow II weigh?
1.2 kg without batteries. The sensor body is 1 m long.
Is a battery included with the MagArrow II?
No. It uses user-supplied 1800 or 2200 mAh 11.1 V Li-Po batteries, which Geometrics says last about 2 hours per charge.
What is the operating temperature of the MagArrow II?
-20°C to +40°C, with IP52 ingress protection.
How do I get data off the MagArrow II?
Over its 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi access point. Geometrics quotes about 1 minute to download 10 minutes of survey data.
