What is the MagNIMBUS vector add-on used for?
MagNIMBUS is a total-field magnetometer: it measures the strength of the magnetic field. A vector measurement also gives the field's direction.
SPH Engineering added support for the MagNIMBUS (QuSpin QTFM Gen-2) vector add-on in SkyHub software v4.0.0, and SkyHub has a vector mode for MagNIMBUS.
QuSpin, the maker of the QTFM Gen-2 sensor, states that an add-on three-axis coil attachment is needed for the sensor to output the vector field. The sensor applies known offset fields along each axis in turn and calculates the vector components of the background field. QuSpin notes that vector output is slower than scalar output, and that vector sensitivity drops as the sensor head approaches a dead zone.
