BATHY-2 is SPH Engineering's trainer-led course on processing bathymetric data collected with a drone-mounted echo sounder. It is for survey teams who fly drone bathymetry and need clean maps and reports. HobiTech coordinates enrolment in India.

Training outline

  • Importing and cleaning survey data
  • Generating bathymetric maps
  • Quality control and reporting
  • Practical exercise (or remote support)

What does the BATHY-2 trainer-led course cover?

BATHY-2 is the second step in SPH Engineering's bathymetry training path. BATHY-1 teaches you how to collect depth data with a drone. BATHY-2 teaches you what to do with that data once you are back in the office. The course uses Eye4Software Hydromagic Survey for data from single-frequency and dual-frequency echo sounders.

According to SPH Engineering's course listing, the topics are:

  • Creating a project and importing survey data
  • Processing raw echo sounder data
  • Building maps and matrices
  • Drawing cross-sections
  • Quality control using check lines
  • Calculating and comparing volumes
  • Generating contours

These steps turn a raw depth log into the deliverables a client expects: a bathymetric map, contour lines, cross-sections and a quality report.

How is the trainer-led course delivered?

SPH Engineering delivers the course in 2 parts. First, you complete an online module at your own pace. Then you join a live Zoom session with an SPH trainer. The course can also be run at SPH Engineering's office. The total duration is up to 4 hours, and one enrolment covers a group of up to 4 students, so a small survey team can train together.

SPH recommends that you collect your own data before the training. Working on your own survey files makes the practical exercise more useful, and the trainer can help with the problems you actually meet in the field.

Who should take BATHY-2, and what do you need first?

The course suits drone operators, hydrographic surveyors and engineers who already collect depth data with a drone echo sounder. SPH Engineering lists 3 prerequisites:

You will also need access to the processing software. HobiTech supplies Hydromagic Survey in India. If you work with multibeam data, the matching courses are MBES-1 and MBES-2, which use BeamworX.

Which drone bathymetry systems does this relate to?

SPH Engineering's echo sounder integrated system is used for water depth mapping, dredging planning and monitoring, and tailings storage facility (TSF) monitoring. The SkyHub software package for echo sounder logs the echo sounder data on board and provides True Terrain Following for DJI drones. SPH lists compatible drones including the DJI M400, M350 and M300. You can browse the sensors in our bathymetry collection, including the EchoNIMBUS-MBES multibeam payload.

A self-paced version of this course is also available: Self-study BATHY-2. To test your skills formally, see the Bathymetry practical exam and certification.

Why enrol through HobiTech?

HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru. The course is delivered by SPH Engineering, and HobiTech coordinates enrolment for customers in India. Every order comes with a GST invoice. See all courses on our bathymetry training page and the full training and certification page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What software is used in BATHY-2?

The course uses Eye4Software Hydromagic Survey to process data from single-frequency and dual-frequency echo sounders.

How long is the BATHY-2 trainer-led course?

SPH Engineering states the training lasts up to 4 hours. It combines a self-paced online module with a live Zoom session, or a session at SPH Engineering's office.

How many people can attend on one enrolment?
