BATHY-1 is SPH Engineering's self-paced video course on collecting bathymetric data with a drone-mounted echo sounder, from sensor setup to mission planning. It suits drone pilots and surveyors, and HobiTech coordinates enrolment in India.

How it works

  • After successful payment, the course is unlocked for your account in the Academy of SPH Engineering platform.
  • Once enrolled, you can finish at your own pace.

What does the BATHY-1 self-study course cover?

BATHY-1 covers the fundamentals of bathymetry survey planning with a drone-mounted echo sounder. It is a self-paced video course on the SPH Engineering Academy. According to the BATHY-1 course page, you learn:

  • Sensor assembly and configuration
  • Mission planning for towing a sensor in the water
  • Grasshopper mode for custom payloads
  • Best practices and practical field techniques

The course works with SkyHub, the onboard computer that connects the sensor to the drone, and UgCS, the mission planning software. SPH Engineering states that after completing the course, students may apply for a certificate of accomplishment issued by SPH Engineering.

Who is BATHY-1 for, and what comes next?

SPH Engineering lists drone service providers, surveying and mapping professionals, hydrographers, environmental monitoring specialists, geophysics professionals and UAV pilots moving into bathymetric services. The course prepares you to set up the sensor, plan the mission and collect depth data in the field. Processing and interpretation of that data are covered in BATHY-2. The SPH BATHY course series has 2 levels, each offered as self-study or trainer-led, plus a practical exam:

Course Focus Self-study Trainer-led
BATHY-1: Bathymetric Data Collection Sensor setup, mission planning and data collection with a drone This course BATHY-1 trainer-led
BATHY-2: Bathymetric Data Processing Survey standards, resolution, data processing and interpretation BATHY-2 self-study BATHY-2 trainer-led

To confirm your skills formally, SPH offers the Practical Exam & Certification for bathymetry. Bathymetry missions rely on UgCS, so the UgCS training courses are a useful starting point.

What hardware and software does the course relate to?

SPH Engineering's drone bathymetry system combines an echo sounder, the SkyHub onboard computer, a radar altimeter for altitude control, UgCS flight planning and Hydromagic Survey or BeamworX software. On its echo sounder technology page, SPH lists the single-frequency ECT 400S (450 kHz, range 0.15–100 m) and the dual-frequency ECT D24S (200/450 kHz, range 0.50–200 m at 200 kHz). Supported drones include the DJI M400, M350 and M300. Related products in our store:
