Trainer-led BATHY-1 is SPH Engineering's live course on running bathymetric surveys with an echo sounder mounted on a drone: setup, survey parameters, mission planning and a field exercise. HobiTech coordinates enrolment for customers in India.

Training outline

  • Mounting the echo sounder on a drone
  • Configuring survey parameters
  • Planning bathymetry survey missions
  • Practical field exercise (or remote support)

What does trainer-led BATHY-1 cover?

This live course with an SPH Engineering trainer teaches you to perform bathymetric surveys with an echo sounder integrated with a drone. According to the SPH Engineering course listing, the programme covers 6 topics:

  • Safety considerations for flights over water
  • System assembly
  • System parameters setup: echo sounder mode, data logging formats, angles and more
  • Planning the survey grid for bathymetric surveys
  • Grasshopper mode for bathymetric surveys
  • Quality control, such as control lines

SPH states a duration of up to 4 hours for a group of up to 4 students. The course can be held at the SPH Engineering office or by video conference.

What do you need before the course?

SPH Engineering asks trainees to have completed UgCS AreaScan and True Terrain Following missions training, or to have equivalent knowledge and experience. Each trainee must also fly a True Terrain Following test mission over ground in a safe, controlled environment. At the start of the session, the trainer reviews the telemetry and SkyHub positioning log files remotely. SPH states that if a trainee cannot show the results of completed missions, the trainer will cancel the session and it has to be rescheduled.

To prepare, see the trainer-led UgCS Area Scan & TTF course and our UgCS training page. For online study, there is a self-study BATHY-1 course. For processing, continue with BATHY-2 self-study or BATHY-2 trainer-led. To confirm your skills, SPH offers the Practical Exam & Certification for bathymetry.

What hardware and software does the course relate to?

SPH Engineering's drone bathymetry system combines an echo sounder, the SkyHub onboard computer, a radar altimeter for altitude control, UgCS flight planning and Hydromagic Survey or BeamworX software. On its echo sounder technology page, SPH lists the single-frequency ECT 400S (450 kHz, range 0.15–100 m) and the dual-frequency ECT D24S (200/450 kHz, range 0.50–200 m at 200 kHz). Supported drones include the DJI M400, M350 and M300. Related products in our store:
