The SkyHub software package for obstacle avoidance and smart navigation adds SkyHub's Obstacle Avoidance function, which triggers a safety action when an obstacle comes too close. It is for teams flying sensor payloads where the drone's own sensors may not be enough. HobiTech supplies it in India as an Official Partner of SPH Engineering.
Obstacle Avoidance
| Safety actions | Return to home, stop and hover (default), warning only, or no action |
| Distance sources | Built-in DJI obstacle sensors, an external Nanoradar MR72 radar, or an extra altimeter |
| Activation | Automatic during a TTF or Grasshopper mission, or when set altitude and speed are both reached |
| Activation altitude | 20 m default (0–500 m) |
| Activation speed | 8 m/s default (0–15 m/s) |
| Safety distance limit | 5 m default (0–50 m) |
| Set up in | UgCS-CPM, Settings > Obstacle avoidance |
What is the SkyHub obstacle avoidance package used for?
SkyHub's Obstacle Avoidance watches the flight path. When an obstacle is detected within the safety distance you set, SkyHub runs the safety action you chose. It stays idle on the ground and while hovering, so it does not get in the way at take-off and landing.
SPH Engineering notes that external sensors add a layer of safety where built-in DJI sensors fail: in the dark, snow, rain, fog and bright sun. If a payload hangs below the drone, the downward DJI sensor must be turned off, or it will see the payload as an obstacle.
What does it work with?
- SkyHub on-board computer hardware.
- SPH Engineering's obstacle detection radar for DJI M300/M350 RTK drones. SPH states it needs SkyHub, an additional SkyHub software package and UgCS.
- DJI drones such as the DJI Matrice 350 RTK and DJI Matrice 400, or MAVLink drones.
- True Terrain Following, as Obstacle Avoidance switches on automatically during TTF missions.
- UgCS and UgCS-CPM for set-up.
Why buy the SkyHub obstacle avoidance package from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an Official Partner of SPH Engineering based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it with DJI's own obstacle sensors?
Yes. Built-in DJI sensors keep working alongside the selected source unless you turn them off. SPH advises setting the DJI Pilot 2 brake distance smaller than the SkyHub safety distance limit, so the two systems do not interfere.
What happens when an obstacle is detected?
SkyHub runs the action you set: return to home, stop and hover, show a warning, or take no action.
Is a 77 GHz radar allowed everywhere?
SPH Engineering advises checking whether 77 GHz radar sensors are permitted in your country before use.
