What's in the kit

  • Medusa Radiometrics MS-350 sensor
  • Transportation box
  • Mountings for DJI M300/M350 RTK drone (mounts for other drones available on request)
  • Power cable (for SkyHub)
  • GPS cable (for SkyHub)
  • Software for data processing (Medusa Gamman)

What is the MS-350 used for?

A gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) measures the energy and intensity of gamma rays emitted by radioactive substances. Each element's gamma-ray energy signature is unique, so the instrument can identify what it is detecting. The MS-350 analyses potassium (40K), uranium (238U), thorium (232Th) and caesium (137Cs) online, during the survey.

Medusa Radiometrics designed the MS-350 for hand-held surveys, and it is also used as an ultralight drone-borne system. At under 3 kg, it suits off-the-shelf drones such as the DJI M350 RTK or Inspired Flight IF800. The sensor measures roughly the upper 50 cm of soil or rock. SPH Engineering lists these uses:

  • Soil and sediment mapping
  • Contamination mapping
  • Mineral and uranium exploration
  • Mine site remediation, including mine waste and tailings

Flown low and slow, a drone survey resolves zones about 2 m across, where crewed helicopter surveys at 100 to 200 m altitude resolve about 100 m.

MS-350, MS-700 or MS-1000?

Model CsI crystal Weight Survey speed
MS-350 350 ml 2.7 kg Up to 15 km/h
MS-700 700 ml 4.7 kg Up to 20 km/h
MS-1000 1000 ml 6.7 kg Up to 30 km/h

The MS-350 is the lightest of the three. SPH Engineering describes it as compact and light enough for most popular drones, and it also works by hand.

How does the MS-350 work with SkyHub and UgCS?

The kit includes mountings for the DJI M300/M350 RTK plus power and GPS cables for the SkyHub onboard computer, which synchronises sensor data with position during every flight. In the air, the sensor runs on the drone's main battery. UgCS flight planning keeps flight paths, altitude profiles and overlap consistent on every revisit; see our UgCS page. SPH also offers True Terrain Following for SkyHub.

Data is saved as JSON, NMEA or CSV. Medusa's mDOS software handles real-time monitoring, and GammAn post-processing software is included in the kit. Browse all gamma-ray spectrometers and the wider Integrated Systems range.

Why buy the MS-350 from HobiTech?

HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH training courses are also available through HobiTech. Read more on SPH Engineering's radiometric mapping page or the Medusa Radiometrics MS-350 page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the MS-350 detect?

Gamma rays from radioactive elements. It identifies 40K, 238U, 232Th and 137Cs during the survey.

How deep does it measure?

Gamma-ray sensors measure roughly the upper 50 cm of the soil or rock surface.

Which drones can carry the MS-350?

At 2.7 kg it suits medium drones such as the DJI M300/M350 RTK and Inspired Flight IF800. The kit includes DJI M300/M350 RTK mountings; mounts for other drones are available on request.

Can I use it without a drone?

Yes. The MS-350 is designed for hand-held surveys, and ground surveys run for up to 8 hours on battery.

Should I choose the MS-350 or the MS-700?

The MS-350 is lighter (2.7 kg) and more portable. The MS-700 has a 700 ml crystal and maps at up to 20 km/h, but weighs 4.7 kg.

How do I buy the MS-350 in India?

Use Request a quote on this page, or call HobiTech on +91 70225 26509. We confirm the price and configuration, and every order comes with a GST invoice.
