What's in the kit

  • Medusa Radiometrics MS-700 sensor
  • Transportation box

  • Power cable (for SkyHub)
  • GPS cable (for SkyHub)
  • Software for data processing (Medusa Gamman)

What is the MS-700 used for?

A gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) measures the energy and intensity of gamma rays emitted by radioactive substances. Each element has its own gamma-ray energies, so the instrument can tell which radionuclides it is detecting. The MS-700 analyses potassium (40K), uranium (238U), thorium (232Th) and caesium (137Cs) online, during the survey.

The sensor measures roughly the upper 50 cm of soil or rock. SPH Engineering lists these drone survey outputs and uses:

  • K, equivalent uranium (eU) and equivalent thorium (eTh) estimates, plus total count
  • Uranium exploration and prospect ranking
  • Lithological discrimination and hydrothermal alteration mapping
  • Legacy mine waste and tailings characterisation
  • Soil, sediment and contamination mapping

Flown low and slow, a drone survey resolves zones about 2 m across, where crewed helicopter surveys at 100 to 200 m altitude resolve about 100 m.

MS-350, MS-700 or MS-1000?

Model CsI crystal Weight Survey speed
MS-350 350 ml 2.7 kg Up to 15 km/h
MS-700 700 ml 4.7 kg Up to 20 km/h
MS-1000 1000 ml 6.7 kg Up to 30 km/h

Larger crystals map faster but weigh more. The MS-700 sits in the middle: it weighs under 5 kg and works best in low-altitude, slow-speed flights.

How does the MS-700 work with SkyHub and UgCS?

The kit includes mountings for the DJI M400 (mounts for other drones on request) plus power and GPS cables for the SkyHub onboard computer, which synchronises sensor data with position during every flight. In the air, the sensor runs on the drone's main battery. UgCS flight planning keeps flight paths, altitude profiles and overlap consistent on every revisit; see our UgCS page. SPH also offers True Terrain Following for SkyHub.

Data is saved as JSON, NMEA or CSV and processed in Medusa's GammAn post-processing software, which is included. Browse all gamma-ray spectrometers and the wider Integrated Systems range.

Why buy the MS-700 from HobiTech?

HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH training courses are also available through HobiTech. Read more on SPH Engineering's radiometric mapping page or the Medusa Radiometrics MS-700 page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a gamma-ray spectrometer measure?

The energy and intensity of gamma rays from radioactive elements. The MS-700 identifies 40K, 238U, 232Th and 137Cs during the survey.

How deep does the MS-700 measure?

Gamma-ray sensors measure roughly the upper 50 cm of the soil or rock surface.

Which drone does the MS-700 fit?

The kit includes mountings for the DJI M400. Mounts for other drones are available on request.

How long can it record?

The 16 GB internal storage holds up to 500 hours of recording. On ground surveys the battery lasts up to 8 hours.

Should I choose the MS-700 or the MS-350?

The MS-700 has twice the crystal volume (700 ml) and maps at up to 20 km/h. The MS-350 is lighter at 2.7 kg and suits medium drones such as the DJI M350 RTK.

How do I buy the MS-700 in India?

Use Request a quote on this page, or call HobiTech on +91 70225 26509. We confirm the price and configuration, and every order comes with a GST invoice.
