What is the EchoLogger ECT D24S used for?
The ECT D24S hangs below a drone on a harness and measures water depth directly under the aircraft. It is built for shallow ponds, lakes and rivers with a lot of seaweed. SPH Engineering explains that the lower 200 kHz frequency passes through seaweed and vegetation on the bottom and still returns clean readings. The higher 450 kHz frequency covers very shallow areas where the lower frequency has a dead zone, down to 0.15 m.
Typical jobs are water depth mapping, dredging planning and monitoring, and hydrology. Accuracy is 0.2% of the measured depth with 1.0 mm range resolution. The ECT D24S is not suited to sediment-thickness measurement; for that, choose the EchoLogger ECT D052S.
How does the ECT D24S compare with other EchoLogger sounders?
| Specification | ECT 400S | ECT D24S | ECT D052S |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frequency | 450 kHz | 200/450 kHz | 50/200 kHz |
| Range | 0.15–100 m | 0.50–200 m / 0.15–100 m | 1.00–200 m / 0.50–200 m |
| Beam width | 5° | 10°/5° | 27°/7° |
| Sediment measurement | No | No | Yes |
| Echo sounder weight | 1.3 kg | 1.3 kg | 1.85 kg |
All three have 0.2% depth accuracy, 1.0 mm resolution and a 2.5 m cable. See the ECT 400S for a single-frequency option.
How does it work with SkyHub, UgCS and your drone?
- SkyHub: the RS232 data cable connects to the SkyHub on-board computer, which logs the depth data. The SkyHub echo sounder software package supports the ECT 400, D24 and D052, sends real-time depth data to the ground station and logs in CSV, NMEA-0183 and SEG-Y.
- Altimeter: SPH Engineering uses an altimeter so the drone flies automatically at a set height over the water and handles tides and waves.
- UgCS: missions are planned in SPH's UgCS flight-planning software.
- Drones: DJI M400, M350 and M300, Inspired Flight IF800 and IF1200A, and WISPR RangerPro.
- Processing: Eye4Software Hydromagic Survey maps depth areas from echo sounder data.
The echosounder USB converter lets you test and configure the ECT D24S, update firmware, or run it on a surface vessel. SPH Engineering states that additional components and software must be purchased to use the sounder with drones. Read more on SPH's echo sounder page. EchoLogger sounders are made by EofE Ultrasonics of South Korea (echologger.com).
Why buy the ECT D24S from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and you have a local team for the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH's bathymetry training courses cover echo sounder data collection (BATHY-1) and processing (BATHY-2). See all sensors in our bathymetry collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the ECT D24S use two frequencies?
The 200 kHz channel passes through seaweed and bottom vegetation for clean readings, and the 450 kHz channel covers very shallow water where the lower frequency has a dead zone.
What depth range does the ECT D24S measure?
0.50 to 200 m at 200 kHz and 0.15 to 100 m at 450 kHz, with 0.2% accuracy of the depth measurement.
Can the ECT D24S measure sediment thickness?
No. For sediment measurement, choose the ECT D052S, whose 50 kHz channel can penetrate organic or light sediments.
Which drones can carry the ECT D24S?
DJI M400, M350 and M300, Inspired Flight IF800 and IF1200A, and WISPR RangerPro. The sounder weighs 1.3 kg, and all airborne components weigh 1.9 kg.
Is SkyHub included with the ECT D24S?
No. The kit includes the RS232 data cable for SkyHub, but the SkyHub computer, software package, altimeter and UgCS are bought separately.
How do I buy the EchoLogger ECT D24S in India?
