What is EchoNIMBUS-SSS used for?

A side-scan sonar builds an acoustic image of the bottom rather than a depth model. EchoNIMBUS-SSS carries two Omniscan 450SS transducers, one facing each side of the flight line. Each transmits at 450 kHz with a narrow 0.5° beam along track and a 50° beam across track, and the sonar reaches up to 150 m. Range resolution is 1/1200 of the range setting.

SPH Engineering lists search and recovery, seabed mapping, locating underwater hazards such as shipwrecks and pipelines, archaeological surveys and environmental monitoring as typical uses. Flying the sonar on a drone lets a team cover water where a boat is slow or hard to launch.

If you need water depth as numbers rather than an image, look at the EchoNIMBUS-MBES multibeam payload or a single-beam echo sounder such as the EchoLogger ECT 400S.

How does it work with SkyHub, UgCS and your drone?

  • SkyHub: the sonars connect through the Ethernet switch module to the SkyHub on-board computer, which logs the data on the drone. The SkyHub connection is sold separately.
  • Altimeter: an altimeter is part of the set-up, so the drone can hold a set height over the water.
  • UgCS: missions are planned and flown in SPH's UgCS flight-planning software.
  • Drones: DJI M400, M350 RTK and M300 RTK, or Pixhawk/Cube-based drones of comparable size. HobiTech lists heavy-payload mounts for the DJI M350/M300 RTK and the DJI M400; we confirm the right mount for your aircraft with the quote.

The payload weighs 1.8 kg, and all airborne components together weigh 2.4 kg.

What else do you need to run it?

SPH Engineering states that additional components and software must be purchased to use this sensor with drones. Plan for the SkyHub on-board computer, an altimeter, UgCS and a drone mount. Why buy EchoNIMBUS-SSS from HobiTech?

HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and you have a local team for the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH training courses are also available, including UgCS training and bathymetry training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between EchoNIMBUS-SSS and EchoNIMBUS-MBES?

EchoNIMBUS-SSS is a side-scan sonar that produces an image of the bottom on both sides of the flight line. EchoNIMBUS-MBES is a multibeam echo sounder that measures a swath of water depths.

What is the range of EchoNIMBUS-SSS?

SPH Engineering specifies a measurement range of 150 m at 450 kHz, with a range resolution of 1/1200 of the range setting.

How many transducers does EchoNIMBUS-SSS have?

Two Cerulean Omniscan 450SS side-scan transducers, each with a 50° cross-track and 0.5° along-track beam.

Which drones can carry EchoNIMBUS-SSS?

DJI M400, M350 RTK and M300 RTK, or Pixhawk/Cube-based drones of comparable size. The full payload weighs 1.8 kg.

Is SkyHub included with EchoNIMBUS-SSS?

No. The kit contains the two sonars, the foldable mount and electronics housing, the Ethernet switch module and an Explorer transport case. SkyHub, the altimeter and UgCS are bought separately.

How do I buy EchoNIMBUS-SSS in India?

Use Request a quote on this page, or call HobiTech on +91 70225 26509. We confirm the price and configuration, and every order comes with a GST invoice.
