Add-on 50 MHz dipole antenna set for the Radar Systems Zond Aero LF drone GPR, for surveyors who need maximum penetration depth rather than fine detail. HobiTech supplies it in India.
Technical
| Central Frequency | 50 MHz |
| Dipole length | 1.5 m (x2) |
| Drone requirement | DJI M400 or comparable or larger Pixhawk/Cube-based drone |
| Compatible with | Radar Systems Zond Aero LF GPR |
What's in the kit
- 2x 50MHz dipole (1.5 m) for Zond Aero LF
- 1x Plastic rod
- 3x Clamp type 1 (rod to unit)
- 5x Clamp type 2 (rod to dipole)
- 2x Plastic cap for dipole
What is the 50 MHz antenna used for?
The Zond Aero LF ships with 100, 150 and 300 MHz dipole antennas. This set adds a lower 50 MHz frequency. SPH Engineering describes the Zond Aero LF with a 50 MHz, 3 m long antenna as giving the "deepest possible penetration": up to a few dozen metres in very low-conductive soils such as dry sand or rocks, or hundreds of metres in ice. SPH calls this an excellent tool for glaciology and deep scanning.
As with any GPR, lower frequencies trade resolution for depth. Use 50 MHz for deep layers and large structures, and the 100 to 300 MHz antennas when you need more detail closer to the surface. Actual depth always depends on the soil and its conductivity.
SPH Engineering states that the Zond Aero LF has been tested with antennas in the 50 to 400 MHz range, and that changing the antenna takes a couple of minutes.
Which drones can carry the 50 MHz antenna?
The two dipoles are each 1.5 m long, so the antenna is about 3 m end to end. SPH Engineering says: "50 MHz dipole antennas require larger drones, such as the DJI M400 or comparable or larger Pixhawk/Cube-based drones. DJI M400 mounts are included as standard."
On the drone, the GPR connects to SPH's SkyHub on-board computer, which logs each trace with GNSS and altimeter data. The SkyHub software package for GPR supports Radar Systems Zond Aero. Missions are planned in UgCS; UgCS EXPERT adds Smart AGL terrain following for a steady height above the ground.
What do you need to run it?
- A Zond Aero LF GPR. This antenna set does not work on its own.
- A drone large enough for 1.5 m dipoles, such as the DJI M400.
- SkyHub hardware and a UgCS licence for flight planning.
- Processing software such as GeoHammer Pro, which imports SEG-Y GPR data. See all GPR software.

Why buy the 50 MHz antenna from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an authorised SPH Engineering partner based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH's GPR training courses are also available through HobiTech.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the 50 MHz antenna?
The set has two 50 MHz dipoles, each 1.5 m long, giving an antenna about 3 m long in total.
How deep can the Zond Aero LF see with the 50 MHz antenna?
SPH Engineering quotes up to a few dozen metres in very low-conductive soils such as dry sand or rocks, and hundreds of metres in ice. Depth depends on ground conditions.
Which drone do I need for the 50 MHz antenna?
A larger drone, such as the DJI M400 or a comparable or larger Pixhawk/Cube-based drone. SPH states that DJI M400 mounts are included as standard.
Does this set include the Zond Aero LF GPR?
No. It contains 2 dipoles, 1 plastic rod, 3 type 1 clamps, 5 type 2 clamps and 2 dipole caps. The GPR is sold separately.
How long does it take to change antennas?
SPH Engineering says changing the antenna on the Zond Aero LF takes a couple of minutes.
