What is the Cobra Drone CBD GPR used for?
It maps what lies under the surface without digging. The 500 MHz centre frequency with a wide 50-1400 MHz bandwidth suits shallow to medium-depth targets: buried utilities and pipes, underground infrastructure, archaeological features, soil layers for geotechnical work and geological stratigraphy. SPH Engineering also lists glaciology and snow or ice thickness profiling.
Typical penetration is 2-4 m, and up to 10 m in favourable ground. Depth always depends on soil type and moisture: dry sand lets the signal travel much further than wet clay. Flying the radar lets you cover sites that are slow, unsafe or impossible to walk, such as fields, slopes, embankments and water-logged ground.
How does it work with a drone, SkyHub and UgCS?
The kit includes brackets for drone mounting and a rugged tablet with cradle, so the same unit can also be used for ground surveys. Its integrated 94 Wh battery powers the radar for up to 10 hours in either mode.
For airborne work, SPH Engineering's SkyHub software package for GPR supports both Radarteam Cobra Plug-In and Cobra CBD systems. It runs on the SkyHub on-board computer, which SPH describes as the data logger for GPR data and the unit that enables True Terrain Following for DJI drones. SPH lists DJI M400, M350 and M300 among the drones supported by its GPR integrations. Flights are planned in UgCS, SPH's mission-planning software, so survey lines stay straight and evenly spaced.
What do you need to run a complete survey?
- A carrier drone with enough payload for the 5.2 kg radar, fitted with the supplied brackets.
- SkyHub: the on-board computer and the GPR software package, for logging and terrain following.
- Flight planning: UgCS EXPERT adds Smart AGL terrain following and Large Projects.
- Processing: Prism2 is included. SPH's GeoHammer Pro is another option; see all GPR software.
- Training: SPH's GPR training courses cover GPR on a UAV, basics and an advanced module.

Why buy the Cobra Drone CBD from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an Official Partner of SPH Engineering based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and you get a local team for the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH-certified GPR training is available through HobiTech.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep can the Cobra Drone CBD see?
Up to 10 m depending on ground properties, with typical penetration of 2-4 m. Wet, conductive soils such as clay reduce depth.
What frequency does it use?
A 500 MHz centre frequency with a 50-1400 MHz operating bandwidth and stroboscopic sampling.
Can I use it on the ground as well as on a drone?
Yes. SPH Engineering lists battery life for both airborne and ground surveys, and the kit includes a rugged tablet with a cradle for mounting on the GPR/antenna.
Which software processes the data?
Prism2 data acquisition and post-processing software is included. Data is saved in standard SEG-Y (.sgy) format with trace geotagging, so it also opens in other GPR software.
Does SkyHub support the Cobra Drone CBD?
Yes. SPH Engineering's SkyHub software package for GPR lists Radarteam Cobra CBD and Cobra Plug-In as supported systems.
