The SPH Engineering water sampler is a drone-carried Ruttner sampler that collects water samples far from the shore without a boat, for environmental agencies, laboratories and water utilities. HobiTech supplies it in India as an authorised SPH Engineering partner.

What is the drone water sampler used for?
Sensors can now assess contamination and turbidity in situ, but water sampling for laboratory analysis will stay widespread for the foreseeable future. Traditional methods need direct access to the water body, so sampling far from the bank usually needs a boat. This system flies the sampler out on a drone instead. Typical uses are water-quality monitoring at sites that are hard to reach, regulatory sampling, response to contamination incidents, and sampling of reservoirs and rivers.
SPH Engineering launched the system on 8 December 2021, announced on its news page. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre noted that it lets water be taken repeatedly from the same location at a constant depth.
How does automated water sampling work?
- Planning: the sampling mission is planned and flown automatically in SPH's UgCS software. See UgCS and UgCS EXPERT.
- Height and depth control: a radar or laser altimeter measures altitude in real time, so the sampler reaches the planned depth.
- Closing the sampler: the SkyHub onboard computer controls the messenger release device, which releases the drop messenger on the sampler's 4 m line to take the sample.
- Temperature: the sampler's internal thermometer reads from -10°C to +50°C.
After the flight, the drone brings the closed sampler back to shore, where the sample is handled and sent for laboratory analysis in the usual way.
