The Geolux RSS-2-AB kit is a K-band Doppler radar that a drone carries over a river to measure water-surface velocity without contact, for hydrologists, water agencies and engineers. HobiTech supplies it in India as an Official Partner of SPH Engineering.

Documentation & data sets
What is the Geolux RSS-2-AB used for?
The kit measures surface flow velocity in rivers and irrigation channels from a drone. It suits sites with no gauging station, banks that are hard to reach, and flood conditions where putting people or boats in the water is unsafe. The radar operates at 24.075–24.175 GHz and sends flow-speed readings 10 times per second over RS-232 to the SkyHub onboard computer, which logs them.
SPH Engineering describes the survey method on its UAV-based hydrometry page. The drone hovers every 2 metres along the river cross-section for at least 20 seconds, with the Doppler radar facing the cross-section. Because it is a radar, it works even when there are no trackable features on the water surface.
| Survey parameter | Value (per SPH Engineering) |
|---|---|
| Hover spacing | Every 2 m across the cross-section |
| Hover time per point | At least 20 seconds |
| Velocity accuracy | 10 cm/s or better |
| Productivity | 0.75–1.5 cross-sections per hour |
| Outputs | Doppler radar spectrum file (SEG-Y) and radar data file (CSV) |
How does it work with SkyHub, UgCS and which drones?
The RSS-2-AB needs the SkyHub onboard computer to log data. SkyHub integration lets you fly the sensor on the DJI M350 RTK, DJI M300 RTK and Pixhawk-based drones. The hover pattern is planned and flown in SPH's UgCS mission-planning software. See UgCS EXPERT and our UgCS page for the editions. The kit ships with its own mountings; for multi-sensor builds HobiTech also supplies the universal mount for heavy payloads (DJI M350/M300 RTK).
How do you calculate river discharge with it?
Surface velocity is one of three inputs. SPH Engineering calculates discharge by combining water-surface elevation, riverbed geometry and surface velocity:
- Water-surface elevation: the Geolux LX-80-AB water level radar, 3 cm accuracy or better.
- Riverbed geometry: LiDAR for dry areas plus a GPR such as the Zond Aero LF or an echo sounder such as the EchoLogger ECT 400S underwater, 10 cm accuracy or better.
- Surface velocity: the Geolux RSS-2-AB, 10 cm/s or better.
SPH notes that drone-based discharge is around 15% less accurate than manual methods, but it allows contactless measurement during floods and at sites without permanent gauges. Browse the full hydrology range.
Why buy the Geolux RSS-2-AB from HobiTech?
HobiTech is an Official Partner of SPH Engineering based in Bengaluru, India. Every order comes with a GST invoice, and our local team supports the sensor, the drone and the software. SPH training courses are also available through our training page. Read more on our SPH Engineering page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Geolux RSS-2-AB measure?
Water-surface flow velocity, without contact. It is a K-band Doppler radar working at 24.075–24.175 GHz, giving 10 readings per second.
How accurate is drone-based velocity measurement?
SPH Engineering states 10 cm/s or better, with the drone hovering every 2 m across the river for at least 20 seconds per point.
Does the kit include the SkyHub onboard computer?
No. The kit contains the sensor, mountings, a cable to SkyHub and data-logging software. SkyHub is required and sold separately as SkyHub hardware.
Which drones can carry the RSS-2-AB?
Through SkyHub, the DJI M350 RTK, DJI M300 RTK and Pixhawk-based drones.
Can I measure river discharge with this kit alone?
No. Discharge also needs water-surface elevation (for example the Geolux LX-80-AB) and riverbed geometry from GPR, an echo sounder or LiDAR.
