What is the SkyHub 3 RS232 cable used for?
SkyHub is SPH Engineering's drone on-board computer. It sits between the flight controller and the payload, logs sensor data and geotags it with the drone's position. To log a sensor, SkyHub needs a physical link to it. This cable is that link for sensors that talk over RS-232.
The cable has a D-SUB 9-pin male plug for the device and a Switchcraft W16982-7SG-P-518 connector for SkyHub. SPH Engineering names the Geonics EM61Lite as an example device. SPH introduced its drone-integrated EM61Lite metal detection system on 30 November 2020. SPH says it finds metallic items, magnetic and non-magnetic, in the first few metres under the surface. Uses include UXO search, underground infrastructure detection and archaeology.
On the drone, SkyHub takes power from the main battery at 12–60 V and offers a configurable 9, 12, 15 or 18 V output at up to 5 A for payloads. It also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, and SPH states it supports terrain following as low as 0.5 m above ground. The data from your RS-232 sensor is logged on SkyHub with the drone's position, ready for processing after the flight.
Which SkyHub and which devices does it fit?
- SkyHub generation: SPH Engineering lists it for SkyHub 3rd generation (SkyHub 3).
- SkyHub ports: SPH Engineering lists 2 RS-232 ports on SkyHub, alongside 4 UART ports, 1 Ethernet port, 4 GPIO pin pairs and 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Devices: any sensor with an RS-232 interface and a D-SUB 9-pin connection, for example the Geonics EM61Lite.
- Other RS-232 sensors: the SkyHub user manual lists RS-232 as the interface for Echologger echo sounders such as the ECT400. Many SPH sensor kits already include their own cable, so check what your kit contains before ordering.
What else do you need?
- The SkyHub on-board computer. SPH Engineering ships it with mountings and cables for the DJI M300/M350 RTK by default. Spare SkyHub mountings and the SkyHub 3 smart cable for M300/M350 RTK are also sold separately.
- A supported drone. SPH lists the DJI M400, M350 RTK and M300 RTK, and PX4 or ArduCopter drones via MAVLink.
- For low-flying sensors, SkyHub True Terrain Following with a radar or laser altimeter. SPH's EM61Lite system uses terrain following with a radar altimeter.
- UgCS for mission planning. The SkyHub user manual asks for UgCS 5.3.0 or higher.
