Short answer: The DJI Dock 3 is a weatherproof "drone in a box" that launches, lands, charges and protects a Matrice 4D or 4TD drone on its own, so inspections and patrols can run on a schedule or on demand without a pilot on site. It is the first DJI dock that can be mounted on a vehicle, and it is rated IP56 for -30°C to 50°C. In India, automated and beyond-visual-line-of-sight flights still need specific DGCA permissions.

Key takeaways
- DJI Dock 3 launched on 27 February 2025 and works only with the Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD aircraft.
- The dock is rated IP56, operates from -30°C to 50°C and recharges the drone from 15% to 95% in about 27 minutes (at 25°C).
- The Matrice 4D series flies for up to 54 minutes, is rated IP55 and has a maximum operating radius of 10 km from the dock, per DJI's test conditions.
- Missions, live feeds and alerts run through DJI FlightHub 2, which also supports a cloud API for linking to other systems.
- HobiTech does not sell the Dock 3 or Matrice 4D series, but can advise on docked operations and supply the Matrice 4E and 4T for piloted work.

What the DJI Dock 3 actually does
A docked drone removes the most expensive part of routine aerial work: sending a trained pilot to the site every time. The Dock 3 is a self-contained base station that houses one drone. When a mission is triggered, from a schedule, an operator in a remote control room or an external alarm, the cover opens and the drone takes off. It flies a planned route, streams video and data back, lands on the dock and starts charging, ready for the next flight.
The dock itself carries its own weather sensors, two 1080p security cameras, compressor-based air conditioning to keep the battery at the right temperature, and a backup battery that keeps it running for more than four hours in a power cut. It weighs 55 kg without the drone and runs on standard 100–240 V AC mains power.
What makes the Dock 3 different
Vehicle mounting
Earlier docks were fixed installations. The Dock 3 is the first DJI dock designed for mobile vehicle-mounted deployment, using a dedicated vehicle-mounted gimbal mount and cloud-based location calibration. DJI's guidance is clear on the limits: the vehicle must be parked on a slope under 3°, and neither the vehicle nor the dock may move while the drone is airborne. Two docks can share one vehicle for alternating flights.
Built for harsh weather
With an IP56 rating and an operating range of -30°C to 50°C, the dock is built for heat, dust and heavy rain. That upper limit matters in much of India, where summer temperatures at solar parks, mines and industrial sites can be extreme. The aircraft is rated IP55 and handles winds of up to 12 m/s.
Fast turnaround
A 27-minute recharge from 15% to 95% means the drone can fly many missions a day. Dock 3 can also work with the D-RTK 3 relay in some regions, and one drone can operate across multiple docks.

Dock 3 and Matrice 4D series at a glance
| Specification | DJI published figure |
|---|---|
| Compatible aircraft | Matrice 4D, Matrice 4TD |
| Dock weight | 55 kg (without aircraft) |
| Dock ingress rating | IP56 |
| Operating temperature | -30°C to 50°C |
| Charging time | About 27 min, 15% to 95% (at 25°C) |
| Backup battery | More than 4 hours |
| Aircraft flight time | Up to 54 min (47 min hover) |
| Max operating radius | 10 km |
| Aircraft rating | IP55, 12 m/s wind resistance |
| Matrice 4D cameras | 4/3-inch 20 MP wide, 48 MP 70 mm medium tele, 48 MP 168 mm tele, laser rangefinder |
| Matrice 4TD cameras | 48 MP wide, medium tele and tele, 640 × 512 thermal (1280 × 1024 in UHR mode), NIR light |
The 4D suits mapping and visual inspection; DJI says only its 4/3-inch wide camera supports mapping without ground control points. The 4TD adds thermal imaging and a near-infrared auxiliary light for night work.
Where docked drones fit in India
Docked drones make the most sense where the same site needs checking again and again:
- Security and perimeter patrol: scheduled night patrols of factories, ports and campuses, with FlightHub 2 linking to existing alarm systems. See the role of drones in India's surveillance and security landscape.
- Solar parks and substations: thermal sweeps to spot hot panels and faulty equipment, with temperature anomaly alerts.
- Mines and construction: regular progress mapping and stockpile measurement with FlightHub 2 change detection.
- Emergency response: a drone that is airborne within moments of an alarm, sending live video before ground teams arrive.
The regulatory reality in India
The hardware is ready; the paperwork takes planning. Under India's Drone Rules, 2021, the aircraft must be registered, flights must respect green, yellow and red zones, and a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate holder remains responsible for the operation. Remote, automated and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) flights are not routine permissions: they need specific approval from DGCA and, depending on the site, other authorities. Budget time for this before ordering hardware. DJI also notes that the Matrice 4D series cannot be used across countries or regions, so a unit bought abroad may not work here. Our guide to DGCA drone rules in India explains the basics.
Can I buy the Dock 3 from HobiTech?
Not at present. HobiTech, an authorised DJI dealer, does not sell the Dock 3, the Matrice 4D or the Matrice 4TD. We can talk you through docked operations and enquire on your behalf through our contact page.
For piloted work today, the DJI Matrice 4E and DJI Matrice 4T share the 4D series' camera layout and are quoted per configuration. Browse our inspection and survey drones or all drones. Call +91 70225 26509 or email support@hobitech.in; we reply shortly between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, every day.

Frequently asked questions
Which drones work with the DJI Dock 3?
Only the Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD. The standard Matrice 4E and 4T cannot land on or charge from the Dock 3.
Can the Dock 3 be mounted on a vehicle?
Yes. It is DJI's first vehicle-mountable dock, but the vehicle must be parked on level ground (under 3° slope) and stay still while the drone is flying.
Is the Dock 3 legal to use in India?
Docked operations are possible but need planning. Automated and BVLOS flights require specific DGCA approval, alongside registration and zone permissions.
How long does the Dock 3 take to charge the drone?
About 27 minutes from 15% to 95% at 25°C, according to DJI.
Does HobiTech sell the Dock 3?
No. HobiTech sells the Matrice 4E, 4T, 350 RTK and 400, quoted per configuration, and can advise on Dock 3 projects via the contact page.
