DJI Matrice 4T Thermal Drone: Specs and Uses in India

Short answer: The DJI Matrice 4T is a compact thermal drone that combines a 640 × 512 thermal camera (1280 × 1024 in High-Res mode) with wide, medium-tele and tele visual cameras, a laser rangefinder and an NIR auxiliary light. It suits solar farm and power line inspection, substation checks, firefighting and search and rescue. In India it is quoted per configuration and flown by DGCA-certified pilots.

Key takeaways

  • Thermal sensor: uncooled VOx, 640 × 512, NETD ≤50 mK, with Super Resolution output at 1280 × 1024, per DJI.
  • Temperature measurement from -20 to 150 °C (high gain) and 0 to 550 °C (low gain), accurate to ±2 °C or ±2% in high gain.
  • Visual cameras: 24 mm 48 MP wide (1/1.3-inch, f/1.7), 70 mm 48 MP medium tele and 168 mm 48 MP tele with up to 112x hybrid zoom.
  • Laser rangefinder reaches 1,800 m; the NIR auxiliary light helps the visual cameras at night.
  • Up to 49 minutes of flight and a 1,219 g take-off weight, which makes it a Micro-category drone in India.
  • Sold by HobiTech, a genuine DJI dealer, as the Matrice 4T Worry-Free Plus Combo, quoted per configuration.

How a thermal drone works

Every object gives off infrared energy in proportion to its temperature. A thermal camera turns that energy into an image, so hot and cold spots stand out regardless of daylight. That is why a failing solar cell, an overloaded joint on a power line or a person in dense scrub appears clearly on a thermal feed, even when a normal camera shows nothing unusual.

Two numbers matter most. Resolution decides how much detail you see from a given height. NETD (noise-equivalent temperature difference) describes how small a temperature difference the sensor can pick out; lower is better. The Matrice 4T's ≤50 mK rating means it can separate very small temperature differences.

Where the Matrice 4T earns its keep

DJI positions the 4T for energy management, emergency response and public safety. Here is how that translates into day-to-day work in India.

Solar farm inspection

Faulty cells, cracked modules and failed bypass diodes often run hotter than healthy panels. A thermal pass over a solar park flags these hotspots quickly, and the 48 MP visual cameras then confirm whether the cause is soiling, shading or damage. For large utility-scale plants, this is far faster than walking rows with a handheld camera.

Power lines and substations

Loose connections and overloaded components heat up before they fail. The 4T can read temperatures from a safe distance, while the 70 mm and 168 mm cameras capture close-up detail of insulators, clamps and fittings. DJI says this 70 mm camera, shared across the Matrice 4 series, can identify screws and cracks on power lines from 10 m.

Firefighting

The low-gain mode measures up to 550 °C, so crews can track a fire front through smoke and spot hotspots during mop-up. The laser rangefinder helps mark a location's coordinates from a distance.

Search and rescue

A warm body stands out against cooler ground at night, in forests or after floods. DJI adds an onboard AI model that detects vehicles and vessels, plus tools that map the ground area the camera has already covered, so teams avoid searching the same patch twice. The NIR auxiliary light and the optional DJI AL1 spotlight help after dark.

Matrice 4T or Matrice 4E?

Both share the same airframe, telephoto cameras, laser rangefinder and RTK. The difference is the main payload. The 4T adds the thermal camera and NIR light, which you need for heat-based inspection and night operations. The Matrice 4E swaps those for a 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera with a mechanical shutter, which is better for photogrammetry and mapping. Our guide to the applications of the Matrice 4E covers that model in detail.

If you need a larger platform for heavier payloads, look at the DJI Matrice 400 or browse our thermal drones collection. DJI's earlier M30T is not sold by HobiTech.

Rules, warranty and buying in India

At 1,219 g, the Matrice 4T is a Micro-category drone under the Drone Rules, 2021. It must be registered on DGCA's Digital Sky platform, and commercial work needs a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate. Flights must also respect red, yellow and green airspace zones. See our DGCA drone rules guide. HobiTech does not offer DGCA pilot training.

The DJI Matrice 4T Worry-Free Plus Combo is quoted per configuration. DJI drones bought from HobiTech carry HobiTech's own 1-year warranty; remote controllers count as accessories and are not covered. Repairs come with a 72-hour turnaround. To discuss your inspection or emergency-response setup, contact our team; we reply shortly during working hours, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, every day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the thermal resolution of the DJI Matrice 4T?

The native thermal sensor is 640 × 512. High-Res (Super Resolution) mode outputs photos and video at 1280 × 1024.

Can the Matrice 4T measure temperature?

Yes. It measures from -20 to 150 °C in high gain and 0 to 550 °C in low gain, accurate to ±2 °C or ±2% (whichever is greater) in high gain.

Is the Matrice 4T good for solar panel inspection?

Yes. Hotspots from faulty cells show up in the thermal feed, and the 48 MP visual cameras help confirm the cause.

Do I need a licence to fly the Matrice 4T in India?

For commercial work, yes: a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate, plus Digital Sky registration for the drone.

What does the Matrice 4T cost in India?

It is quoted per configuration. Call +91 70225 26509 or email support@hobitech.in for a quote.
