Short answer: The DJI Matrice 4 series is a scouting, mapping and monitoring tool for farms and forests, not a sprayer. The Matrice 4E builds accurate maps and 3D models with its mechanical-shutter wide camera, while the Matrice 4T adds a 640 × 512 thermal camera for fire hotspots, night patrols and wildlife counts. For spraying and spreading you need a DJI Agras drone.

Key takeaways
- Matrice 4 drones carry cameras only. They have no spray tank or spreader; that job belongs to the DJI Agras series.
- The Matrice 4E pairs a 4/3-inch 20 MP wide camera (with mechanical shutter) with 70 mm and 168 mm telephoto cameras, shooting every 0.5 s in mapping missions.
- The Matrice 4T swaps in a 48 MP wide camera and adds a 640 × 512 thermal sensor (1280 × 1024 in High-Res mode) and an NIR auxiliary light.
- Both models have a laser rangefinder rated to 1,800 m, up to 49 minutes of flight and built-in RTK, per DJI's published specifications.
- Neither model has a multispectral camera, so they cannot produce NDVI crop-health maps on their own.
- Both are quoted per configuration at HobiTech, a genuine DJI dealer.

What the Matrice 4 series is, and what it is not
DJI launched the Matrice 4 series in January 2025 as a compact, foldable enterprise platform. DJI positions it for mapping, inspection, public safety and emergency response, not as a crop drone. Older articles sometimes blur that line, so here it is plainly: a Matrice 4 cannot spray pesticide, spread fertiliser or sow seed.
What it does well is gather data. On a farm or in a forest that means accurate orthomosaics, 3D models, close-up zoom imagery and, on the 4T, heat maps. That data then tells an Agras crew or a forest officer where to act.
If spraying is your goal, compare the DJI Agras T70P and DJI Agras T100 in our agriculture drones collection. Both are price on request.

Matrice 4E for farm mapping and planning
The DJI Matrice 4E is the mapping model. Its mechanical shutter avoids the rolling-shutter distortion that can soften photogrammetry, and DJI rates mapping flight speed at up to 21 m/s with a 0.5-second shooting interval in orthophoto and oblique modes.
On agricultural land, that makes the 4E useful for:
- Field boundaries and acreage: an orthomosaic gives a measurable, up-to-date base map.
- Drainage and levelling: elevation models show where water pools or runs off.
- Spray-route planning: accurate field maps help define Agras flight areas and no-spray margins.
- Storm and flood damage records: dated imagery documents what happened and where.
The integrated RTK module is rated at 1 cm + 1 ppm horizontal accuracy with an RTK fix. For how RTK, PPK and ground control points compare, read our guide to RTK vs PPK vs GCP.
Matrice 4T for forest fires, wildlife and night work
The DJI Matrice 4T earns its place in forestry through its thermal camera. Smouldering hotspots, often invisible in smoke or after dark, show up clearly in a thermal feed. The low-gain mode reads up to 550 °C, and the laser rangefinder lets a pilot mark a hotspot's position from a safe distance.
DJI also highlights the 4T's night mode for nighttime wildlife protection. In practice, forest teams use thermal drones to:
- Check fire lines for remaining hotspots after a burn.
- Survey animal populations at dusk or night, when many species are active.
- Patrol plantations and reserves for intrusion after dark.
- Locate people lost in dense terrain during search and rescue.
The NIR auxiliary light helps the visible cameras see at short range in darkness, and DJI's onboard AI can flag vehicles and vessels during searches.

The multispectral gap
Crop-health indices such as NDVI need a multispectral camera that records specific red, red-edge and near-infrared bands. DJI's Matrice 4 specifications list no such sensor, so neither the 4E nor the 4T produces true NDVI maps. RGB imagery can still reveal obvious stress, gaps and lodging, but it is not a substitute for calibrated multispectral data.
DJI's multispectral option is the Mavic 3 Multispectral, which HobiTech does not sell. If your project depends on crop-health indices, talk to our team and we can advise on the right approach.
Rules, buying and support in India
Both Matrice 4 models weigh about 1.22 kg at take-off, which places them in the Micro category (250 g to 2 kg) under the Drone Rules, 2021. Commercial operation needs a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate, a registered drone on Digital Sky and attention to airspace zones. Our DGCA drone rules guide covers the details. HobiTech does not run DGCA pilot training.
The Matrice 4E and 4T are quoted per configuration. DJI drones bought from HobiTech carry HobiTech's own 1-year warranty (remote controllers count as accessories and are not covered), and HobiTech's repair service offers a 72-hour turnaround. Delivery is free by DTDC, usually dispatched within 3 days and arriving 2–3 days later.

Frequently asked questions
Can the DJI Matrice 4 spray crops?
No. The Matrice 4E and 4T carry cameras only. For spraying and spreading, look at the DJI Agras T70P or T100.
Which Matrice 4 model is better for forestry?
The Matrice 4T, because its thermal camera detects fire hotspots and animals at night. Choose the 4E if your main job is mapping and 3D modelling.
Does the Matrice 4 support NDVI mapping?
Not natively. It has no multispectral sensor. Contact HobiTech if you need crop-health indices and we can advise.
Do I need a licence to fly a Matrice 4 for farm work?
Yes. It is a Micro-category drone (about 1.22 kg), so commercial flights need a DGCA Remote Pilot Certificate and Digital Sky registration. Our DGCA rules guide, linked above, has the details.
How much does a Matrice 4E or 4T cost in India?
Both are quoted per configuration. Call +91 70225 26509 or email support@hobitech.in between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, any day.
