Trainer-led Methane Leak Detection using Drones is SPH Engineering's live course on the Laser Falcon methane detector: mounting it on a drone, setting up surveys and planning missions. It suits drone survey teams, and HobiTech coordinates enrolment in India.
Training outline
- Mounting the methane detector on a drone
- Configuring survey parameters
- Planning methane detection missions
- Practical field exercise (or remote support)
What does the trainer-led methane course cover?
This is a live course with an SPH Engineering trainer. It teaches how to use the Laser Falcon methane detector for drone surveys, from assembling the system to processing the data. According to the SPH Engineering course listing, the programme covers:
- Basics of methane detection with the Laser Falcon sensor
- Assembling the drone-based system
- Flight planning fundamentals for long linear objects, such as pipelines
- Flight planning fundamentals for areal objects
- Taking weather conditions into account: wind, precipitation, snow and sun
- Using the True Terrain Following (TTF) option for methane leak detection missions
- Processing the collected data
SPH states that the course lasts up to 2 days and is for a group of up to 4 students. It can be held at the SPH Engineering office or by video conference.
Who is it for, and what do you need before you start?
The course is for drone pilots and survey teams who will run methane leak detection flights. SPH Engineering asks students to have knowledge and practical experience in 2 UgCS topics first:
- UgCS Basics — see the trainer-led UgCS Basics course
- UgCS AreaScan and True Terrain Following missions — see the trainer-led UgCS Area Scan & TTF course
Both are listed on our UgCS training page. If you prefer to learn online first, there is also a self-study methane leak detection course. To confirm your skills formally, SPH offers the Practical Exam & Certification for the methane detector.
What hardware and software does the course relate to?
SPH Engineering's drone methane system combines a laser methane detector, the SkyHub onboard computer and UgCS flight planning. On its methane detection technology page, SPH describes the current Falcon Plus TDLAS detector. It uses tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS): the sensor emits a laser beam and measures the reflected energy, and a methane cloud absorbs part of that energy. SPH states that it reliably detects about 500 ppm from 40 m or more and 1000 ppm from 60 m or more, with a response time of 25 ms. The system works with drones such as the DJI M300, M350 and M600. UgCS shows methane readings to the pilot in real time, and DroneGIS processes the data into emission maps. Related products in our store:
