What is the SkyHub metal detector package used for?
SkyHub is SPH Engineering's drone onboard computer. It adds industrial sensing to off-the-shelf drones and supports GPR, magnetometers, echo sounders, methane detectors, metal detectors, gamma-ray spectrometers and side-scan sonar. Each sensor type needs its own SkyHub software package. This one is the metal-detector package: SkyHub firmware plus a companion application that runs inside UgCS.
The supported detector is the Ebinger VEMOS AIR Mk2. It is an electromagnetic impulse (EMI) instrument that detects conductive materials. According to SPH Engineering, it finds non-ferrous conductors and smaller objects than a magnetometer. SPH also lists its limits: it cannot detect deep targets (more than 2 m), and it cannot detect landmines with minimal metal content. Typical jobs are UXO clearance surveys and searches for buried metal objects.
How does it work with SkyHub, UgCS and your drone?
- Data logging: SkyHub records all mission data offline in standard formats such as CSV, SEG-Y and NMEA-0183.
- Flight planning: you plan and fly the survey grid in UgCS; the companion application adds the detector to the UgCS workflow.
- Low, constant height: with the SkyHub True Terrain Following package and an altimeter, SkyHub keeps the drone at a set height above ground, as low as 0.5 m.
- Drones: SkyHub supports the DJI M400, M350 RTK and M300 RTK, and Pixhawk/Cube autopilots (ArduCopter/PX4) via MAVLink. SPH lists the VEMOS AIR Mk2 for the DJI M400, DJI M350/M300 RTK and Inspired Flight IF1200A or similar.
- Power: SkyHub takes 12–60 V from the drone's main battery.
