What is the LiDAR360 Terrain module used for?

SPH Engineering describes the licence as unlocking the group of functions that classify ground points and generate DSM and DTM models. It turns a raw survey point cloud into a surface model (DSM, including buildings and vegetation) and a bare-earth terrain model (DTM).

GreenValley says the module supports the complete workflow for producing, checking and refining terrain products, with 15 types of terrain products including DEM and contours. It also lists:

• Hydrology: REM, drainage and flood-area generation.
• Engineering surveys: volume measurement, change detection and section analysis.
• Topographic mapping and geological surveys: DEM and contour production.

What do you need to run it?

The Terrain module is an add-on to the LiDAR360 Framework base licence, which handles data management, strip alignment and point-cloud classification. If you work in forestry, the LiDAR360 Forestry module relies on Terrain for tools such as CHM segmentation and Normalize by DEM, because GreenValley does not include terrain functions in Forestry.

What does a typical terrain workflow look like?

1. Capture: fly the LiDAR survey with a UgCS mission, including IMU calibration legs.
2. Prepare: load the data into the LiDAR360 Framework, run automatic strip alignment and classify the point cloud.
3. Classify ground: use the Terrain module's ground-point classification to separate bare earth from buildings and vegetation.
4. Generate models: build the DSM and DTM, then DEM, contours and the other terrain products you need.
5. Analyse: run volume measurement, change detection, section analysis, or REM, drainage and flood-area outputs for hydrology work.
