Propeller guard and palm takeoff
The Flip's full-coverage guard encloses all four propellers and folds with the arms, so the drone stays compact in the bag. With palm takeoff, you hold the Flip from below with the camera facing you, confirm yourself as the subject, and it lifts off without the remote controller. This makes it easy to film yourself, your family or a small group from close range.
The guard reduces the risk of propeller contact, but it is not permission to fly over crowds, and DJI advises never grabbing the drone while it is flying.
What the obstacle sensing can and cannot do
The Flip has forward 3D infrared sensing and a downward vision and infrared system, per DJI. It does not have side or rear sensing. DJI also notes that:
- Automatic braking works in Normal mode, Cine mode and during Return to Home, when an obstacle is detected about 1 m ahead.
- Intelligent functions, including subject tracking, do not avoid obstacles.
So when the Flip is tracking you, choose an open space and keep it in sight. If you want obstacle sensing in every direction, see the DJI Lito X1 or DJI Mini 4 Pro.
DJI Flip or DJI Lito X1?
Both have a 1/1.3-inch 48 MP sensor at f/1.7, 4K/60fps HDR and D-Log M, and weigh under 249 g, and both combos come with the DJI RC 2, three batteries, a charging hub and a bag. The DJI Lito X1 Fly More Combo (DJI RC 2) adds:

DJI Flip or DJI Mini 3?
Both have a 1/1.3-inch 48 MP sensor and weigh under 249 g, and both combos have a screen controller. Compared with the DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo (DJI RC), the Flip adds a full-coverage propeller guard, palm takeoff, subject tracking, forward infrared sensing, 4K/60fps HDR, 4K/100fps slow motion and DJI O4 transmission. The Mini 3 flies longer, up to 38 minutes per battery, and costs less at ₹84,990 plus GST.
DJI Flip or DJI Neo?
Both are palm-launch drones with propeller guards for filming yourself. The DJI Neo Fly More Combo is smaller and costs ₹47,990 plus GST, but has a 1/2-inch 12 MP sensor, 4K at up to 30fps and about 18 minutes per battery. The Flip has a much larger 1/1.3-inch 48 MP sensor, 4K/60fps HDR, up to 31 minutes per battery and the DJI RC 2 screen controller. Choose the Neo for a small, low-cost selfie drone. Choose the Flip for image quality and longer flights.
Who the Flip Fly More Combo is for
- Vloggers and creators who film themselves and want palm takeoff and subject tracking

- First-time pilots who want an extra margin of safety
- Travellers who want three batteries, a charging hub and a bag in one kit
- Anyone who wants to fly in India without a Remote Pilot Certificate
Choose something else if you want obstacle sensing in every direction (the DJI Lito X1 Fly More Combo (DJI RC 2)), the longest flight time for the money (the DJI Mini 3 Fly More Combo), or a small, low-cost selfie drone (the DJI Neo Fly More Combo).
Is it legal to fly in India?
Yes. At under 249 g (per DJI), the DJI Flip is a nano drone (250 g or less) under India's Drone Rules, 2021:
- No Remote Pilot Certificate is needed to fly a nano drone (Rule 36).
- You must register it on the DGCA Digital Sky platform and get a Unique Identification Number (UIN) before flying (Rule 14).
- Before each flight, check the Digital Sky airspace map for green, yellow and red zones.
Flying tips for the DJI Flip
HobiTech's tips for your first flights (general good practice; always follow the DJI user manual):
- Practise palm takeoff in still air. Hold the Flip from below with the camera facing you, keep your fingers clear of the guard, and never try to grab it in flight.
- Add a microSD card. The 2 GB of built-in storage is fine for a few clips, but a card gives you room for a full day of 4K.
- Charge everything the night before. The Parallel Charging Hub charges two batteries at once; charge the DJI RC 2 too.
- Update firmware at home. Update the drone and the DJI RC 2 before you travel, and calibrate the compass if the app asks.
- Track in open spaces. Subject tracking does not avoid obstacles, so start it away from trees, poles and wires.
- Wait for a strong GPS signal. Check the signal before take-off, so Return to Home knows where to come back to.
- Check the wind. DJI rates wind resistance up to 10.7 m/s. On gusty days, stay low and close, and land early.
- Register before you fly. Get the UIN on Digital Sky before your first outdoor flight, and check the airspace map every time you fly somewhere new.
- Check the guard and propellers every time. Replace any propeller that is chipped or bent. Spare propellers come in the box.
- Land with charge to spare. Plan to be back and landed well before the battery runs low.
- Let batteries cool before charging. After a flight, wait until the battery is no longer warm before you put it in the hub, and avoid leaving batteries in a hot car.

Can I fly the DJI Flip indoors?
The full-coverage guard and palm takeoff make it one of the easier DJI drones to fly in larger indoor spaces. GPS is weak or unavailable indoors, so give yourself room, fly slowly and keep away from people's faces.
Is the DJI Flip safe around people?
The guard encloses all four propellers, so it is safer than an unguarded drone for filming people up close. It is still not permission to fly over crowds, and DJI advises never grabbing the drone while it is flying.
Does the DJI Flip have obstacle avoidance?
Partly. It has forward 3D infrared sensing and downward sensing, and brakes automatically when it detects an obstacle about 1 m ahead in Normal or Cine mode and during Return to Home. It has no side or rear sensing, and subject tracking does not avoid obstacles.
