Before launch, the DJI Mavic 3 Pro was the subject of a lot of guesswork: rumoured 8K video, interchangeable cameras, a 40-minute battery. DJI announced it in April 2023, and it turned out to be something different. This guide sets out what the Mavic 3 Pro actually is, how it compares with the early talk, and who it still makes sense for in India today.
What the Mavic 3 Pro turned out to be
The Mavic 3 Pro is a folding camera drone with three cameras on one gimbal, which no earlier compact DJI drone had. Instead of swapping lenses, you switch between three fixed focal lengths in the DJI Fly app:
- Hasselblad main camera: 4/3-inch CMOS, 20 MP, 24 mm equivalent, adjustable aperture f/2.8 to f/11.
- Medium tele camera: 1/1.3-inch CMOS, 48 MP, 70 mm equivalent, f/2.8.
- Tele camera: 1/2-inch CMOS, 12 MP, 166 mm equivalent, f/3.4.
The main camera records up to 5.1K at 50 fps and 4K at up to 120 fps, with 10-bit D-Log, D-Log M and HLG for colour grading. DJI rates the flight time at up to 43 minutes in controlled conditions. Obstacle sensing is omnidirectional, and the drone weighs 958 g. The Mavic 3 Pro Cine version (963 g) adds Apple ProRes recording and a 1 TB built-in SSD for productions that need the highest bitrates.
The rumours versus what shipped
| Early talk | What DJI shipped |
|---|---|
| 8K video | No 8K. Up to 5.1K/50fps and 4K/120fps from the main camera. |
| Interchangeable cameras | No swapping. Three fixed cameras (24, 70 and 166 mm) on one gimbal. |
| Four Thirds sensor "too big for a compact drone" | It happened: the main Hasselblad camera uses a 4/3-inch sensor. |
| Around 40 minutes of flight | Rated at up to 43 minutes in controlled conditions. |
| Full 360-degree obstacle avoidance | Omnidirectional binocular vision sensing, plus an infrared sensor. |
As with most pre-launch speculation, some guesses landed and others did not. The bigger story was the triple-camera design, which hardly featured in the early leaks.
Who the Mavic 3 Pro suits
The three focal lengths are what set it apart. The 70 mm and 166 mm cameras let you compress a scene, frame a subject from a distance or film wildlife and events without flying close. That makes it a strong tool for:
- Filmmakers and wedding videographers who want cinematic tele shots and a 4/3 main camera for grading.
- Real-estate and travel creators who want wide establishing shots and tighter detail shots on the same flight.
- Photographers who value the Hasselblad colour and adjustable aperture on the main camera.
It is not a beginner's drone. At 958 g it is a micro-category drone in India: it must be registered on DGCA's eGCA portal, and commercial flying needs a Remote Pilot Certificate. If you mainly want a light travel drone, a sub-250 g Mini is easier to own and fly.
Mavic 3 Pro or Mavic 4 Pro in 2026?
DJI's successor, the Mavic 4 Pro, keeps the three-camera idea and moves it up a level: a 100 MP 4/3 Hasselblad main camera, 70 mm and 168 mm tele cameras, 6K/60fps HDR video and the rotating Infinity Gimbal. HobiTech now stocks the DJI Mavic 4 Pro Fly More Combo rather than the Mavic 3 Pro. For a side-by-side look at image quality and handling, read our Mavic 4 Pro vs Mavic 3 Pro comparison.
If you already own a Mavic 3 Pro, it remains a very capable camera drone. Our Bengaluru service centre repairs Mavic-series drones, and you can trade it in towards a newer model.
FAQs
When did DJI launch the Mavic 3 Pro?
DJI announced the Mavic 3 Pro in April 2023.
Does the DJI Mavic 3 Pro shoot 8K video?
No. Its Hasselblad main camera records up to 5.1K at 50 fps and 4K at up to 120 fps.
What is the difference between the Mavic 3 Pro and the Mavic 3 Pro Cine?
The Cine version adds Apple ProRes recording and a 1 TB built-in SSD. The standard Mavic 3 Pro records H.264 and H.265 and has 8 GB of internal storage.
Do I need a licence to fly the Mavic 3 Pro in India?
The Mavic 3 Pro weighs 958 g, so it is a micro drone. It must be registered on DGCA's eGCA portal, and you need a Remote Pilot Certificate to fly it commercially.
Does HobiTech sell the Mavic 3 Pro?
We now stock its successor, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro. We still service Mavic 3 Pro drones at our Bengaluru service centre.
