The DJI Matrice 4E Worry-Free Plus Combo is DJI's compact enterprise drone for surveying, mapping, construction and mining, supplied with the DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise controller. The Matrice 4E has three cameras: a 20 MP 4/3 CMOS wide camera with a mechanical shutter, a 48 MP 70 mm medium tele camera and a 48 MP 168 mm tele camera, plus a laser rangefinder that measures up to 1,800 m. DJI rates it at up to 49 minutes of flight, with RTK positioning, 0.5-second interval shooting and mapping flights at up to 21 m/s. Is it legal to fly in India?
Yes, with the right paperwork. At 1,219 g (per DJI), the Matrice 4E is a micro drone (more than 250 g, up to 2 kg) under India's Drone Rules, 2021:
- You must register it on the DGCA Digital Sky platform and get a Unique Identification Number (UIN) before flying.
- A Remote Pilot Certificate is needed for commercial work, which covers most surveying, mapping and inspection jobs.
- Third-party insurance is required for drones heavier than the nano class.
- Before each flight, check the Digital Sky airspace map for green, yellow and red zones.
Rules can change, so check Digital Sky before you fly.
Field tips for the Matrice 4E
HobiTech's tips for survey teams (general good practice; always follow the DJI user manual and your project specification):
- Plan for more batteries. The kit has one flight battery, so add spares for a full day of mapping.
- Get an RTK fix before take-off. Connect to a network RTK service or a base station, and wait for a fix in DJI Pilot 2.
- Use ground control points when accuracy matters. Check points confirm your final map accuracy.
- Carry fast microSD cards. The drone has no internal storage, and 0.5-second interval shooting fills cards quickly.
- Update firmware at the office. Update the aircraft and the DJI RC Plus 2 Enterprise before you travel to site.
- Check the wind. DJI rates wind resistance at 12 m/s. Mapping in gusts can blur images and reduce overlap.
- Mind the heat. DJI rates operation up to 40 °C, so on Indian summer sites, fly early and keep batteries shaded.
- Register, certify and insure first. Get the UIN, the pilot's Remote Pilot Certificate and third-party insurance before commercial flights.
- Keep obstacle sensing on near structures. Thin wires and cables are still hard to detect, so keep the drone in sight.
- Let batteries cool before charging. Wait until the battery is no longer warm before you put it in the hub.
